About The Customer
Planetary Resources is a space exploration company founded in 2010 in Redmond, Washington that plans to mine asteroids by 2050.
The Challenge

Planetary Resources expects that the Arkyd spacecraft will eventually be mass-produced at cost significantly lower than current spacecraft, so weight must be minimized to the greatest extent possible.

The Solution

The Planetary Resources design for the Arkyd 200 and 300 uses patented QuickCast patterns from 3D Systems to make the propulsion system structurally integrated with the spacecraft itself.

Operational Impact
  • [Efficiency Improvement - Quality Assurance]
3D printing enables a level of precision and integration that is unattainable with traditional manufacturing techniques.
  • [Cost Reduction - Operation]
Total cost of ownership of equipment operations is minimized through the use of highly efficient, organic 3D-printed designs.
